Manchester United had reached an agreement to sell Antony to Real Betis but the Spanish club have now ‘withdrawn’ their offer.

Antony thrived on loan at Betis in the second half of last season and a return to the La Liga club has been the winger’s preferred destination this summer.

Betis had initially hoped to sign Antony on a season-long loan with an option to buy but in the final week of the summer transfer window, United have negotiated a permanent deal.

According to The Athletic, United had agreed an initial €25 million (£21.6m) transfer fee, with an additional €3m (£2.6m) in add-ons.

United have also included a 50 per cent sell-on clause in Betis’ deal.

However, ABC report that an agreement between Antony and the two clubs ‘is not even close’ due to the salary he is still owed by United, believed to be in excess of €6m (£5.1m).

Antony is willing to take a pay cut in order to re-join Betis but the winger is not willing to waive the money owed by United on the remaining two years of his contract.

Betis believe they have stretched their finances as much as possible in order to sign the 25-year-old.

United have granted Antony permission to travel to Seville to undergo a medical but Betis has not given the green light and are said to be exploring alternative signings.

Betis subsequently released a statement which read: ‘There is no agreement for Antony and we have withdrawn the offer.

‘We can’t afford the fee and the amounts that Manchester United must instead pay the player before the transfer.’

Antony, who joined United from Ajax for £81.3m in August 2022, has not made an appearance for Ruben Amorim’s side this season and has been training away from the first-team squad.
