First Avatar: Fire and Ash Trailer Previews a New Chapter in Pandora’s Saga

Slated for release on December 19, 2025, Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third installment in the James Cameron Avatar series. The film is set in a darker, more volatile part of Pandora, introducing new Na’vi tribes that escalates the conflicts and explores grief as well as morality, the whole of Cameron’s vision.

Filmed back to back with The Way of Water in New Zealand, wrapping in December 2020, Fire and Ash overcame nine delays due to the 2023 Writers Guild strike, the COVID-19 pandemic and Cameron’s perfectionism. Longer than the 3 hours 12 minutes of the previous film, it follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) as their family deals with the loss of their son Neteyam and new threats.

The Ash People, a volcanic dwelling Na’vi tribe led by Varang (Oona Chaplin) introduce moral complexity. Unlike the peaceful Omaticaya or aquatic Metkayina their harsh lava scarred homeland shapes their fierce ethos and they reject Eywa’s spiritual guidance. The trailer released July 28, 2025 shows their fire wielding combat with flaming arrows and Varang’s line “Your goddess has no dominion here” signaling ideological clashes.
The Wind Traders, a nomadic sky faring tribe add colour and contrast, sailing balloon like airships towed by jellyfish like creatures. Their blue sailed vessels are ambushed by the Ash People’s red hued flying beasts with David Thewlis as Peylak hinting at their broader role. These tribes add to the diversity of Pandora’s divided world.
The Sully family anchor the story with Jake and Neytiri dealing with grief. Their children Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss) and adopted human Spider (Jack Champion) face personal trials with Lo’ak narrating and shifting from Jake’s perspective. Tensions like Lo’ak shoving Spider and Jake’s plea to Neytiri “You cannot live like this baby, in hate” highlight the emotional stakes.
The human threat continues with Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) aligning with the Ash People, painted red and the RDA’s ongoing assault with water based ships and military bases. Chaotic trailer scenes – fire on floating rocks, aerial battles and a Na’vi in distress – signal a darker more intense conflict.
Shot in Dolby Vision for IMAX 3D Fire and Ash is stunning with volcanic landscapes and Weta Digital’s refined effects building on The Way of Water’s underwater capture. Kate Winslet’s Ronal set a 7 minute 14 second breath holding record. Cameron’s nuanced narrative exploring the Ash People’s moral ambiguity and the Sully family’s struggles goes beyond the simple human-Na’vi dynamic as producer Jon Landau noted before his 2024 passing.
The trailer’s “stunning” visuals and “doom and rage” have generated a lot of hype with critics predicting a 2025 box office behemoth. Returning cast members like Joel David Moore and newcomers like Jemaine Clement join Simon Franglen’s score. Following the $5.2 billion success of the previous films, Fire and Ash sets up Avatar 4 (2029) and beyond for a wild ride back to Pandora.
