James Maddison injury update after Tottenham star is stretchered off in Newcastle friendly | Football

James Maddison has suffered a major knee injury on the eve of the new Premier League season in a huge blow to Tottenham.
Spurs drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in South Korea on Sunday, in what was an emotional pre-season friendly.
The match marked the final appearance of captain Son Heung-min, who earlier announced he would be leaving Tottenham after an incredible decade at the club.
But there were concerning scenes in the final few minutes of the game when Maddison pulled up and fell to the pitch in a lot of distress, with physios quickly rushing to his aid.
As the England international was attended to, distraught teammates watched as the attacking midfielder was stretchered off with his hands covering his face.
Even Son, looking on from the bench, was clearly shaken by the incident, with manager Thomas Frank giving a worrying update post-match.
‘James Maddison’s injury looks bad. It was a brutal moment,’ the Dane said.

‘I think sometimes in life and football things can be both beautiful and brutal. That’s what we got today.
‘It looks like with Madders a bad injury and then on the other side unbelievable scenes for Son from his teammates and the respect from the Newcastle players.
‘First we had the walkaround and then the team-mates gathered around and he was emotional. In the changing room it was more of the same.

‘I just said a few things but not much because it’s about Sonny and then he said a few things. It was beautiful.
‘We’re pretty sure it was the same knee he injured before.’
The timing of Maddison’s injury could not be worse with less than two weeks to go before Tottenham host Burnley in their first Premier League game of the 2025/26 season.

The Lilywhites travel to Germany to take on Bayern Munich in their final pre-season fixture on Thursday.
They kick-off the new season on August 13 when they face PSG in the UEFA Super Cup, before playing Burnley on August 16.
Maddison has been a key player for Spurs since joining from Leicester two years ago, contributing 16 goals and 21 assists in 75 games.
The 28-year-old is in line to become club captain following Son’s departure but has suffered numerous injury issues through his career, missing the end of the last season, including the Europa League final, with a knee issue.
