You play as Sarah Connor and the T-800, battling the T-1000 to stop Skynet’s Armageddon. You also get to play as John Connor, the leader of the Resistance. The game has levels from the 1991 film like the freeway chase but with new scenarios that lead to multiple endings.

Story Mode is the full story, guiding you through missions that mirror the film’s intensity but with new levels. Arcade Mode is score chasing for those who want instant gratification. Infinite Mode is endless waves of enemies, Boss Rush is against Skynet’s deadliest creations in a series of high stakes battles. Mother of the Future is a mystery, unlocked after you’ve completed the other modes. Level Training lets you practice at specific levels.

Four difficulty options—Easy Money, No Problemo, Hasta La Vista and Judgment Day—cover different skill levels. Easy Money has infinite continues and no time limits (except for one level), perfect for beginners. No Problemo is the middle ground, recommended for most. Hasta La Vista is harder, with tighter enemy patterns and less room for error. Judgment Day, unlocked after Mother of the Future, is for the hardcore, with faster attacks and more punishing mechanics.

The arcade soul is most evident in the scoring system. Each level gives you a score, so you try to get high scores and put your initials on the virtual leaderboards. Master combinations, collect powerups and avoiding damage are the keys to success. It’s a system that rewards skill and replayability so you perfect every jump and shot. The trailer shows fast platforming and gunplay with Sarah and the T-800 dodging the T-1000’s liquid metal blades or blasting Skynet’s drones in pixelated glory. Levels like the Freeway Chase where you alternate between driving and shooting a shrinking crosshair capture the film’s tension and add arcade flair.

Visually it’s a 2D sprite fest, lovingly made to look like 16-bit. Sarah, John and the T-800 are animated to perfection, and the environments from Cyberdyne’s labs to the war torn future are full of personality. The soundtrack is the cherry on top, reimagined tracks from Brad Fiedel’s Terminator 2 score and original compositions.

Digital pre-orders are coming and there’s talk of retro ports, but details are still under wraps.
