We Are Rewind’s GB-001 Puts a Modern Twist on the Classic Boombox

A cassette tape boombox is a relic of another era in 2025 when music seemingly falls from the sky and earbuds are almost invisible. But We Are Rewind’s GB-001 does more than just revive an old format; the boombox does it with such accuracy that you’ll want to start making new mixtapes or dig out your old ones.

The GB-001’s sound is defined by four high-fidelity speakers: two soft-dome tweeters for vocals and highs, and two woofers for bass. Powered by Class D amplifiers, they pump out 104 watts total, 32 watts from each woofer and 20 watts from each tweeter. This configuration produces a big, immersive stereo soundstage that fills a room without sacrificing clarity. Even at loud volumes, features like dynamic power control keep distortion to a minimum and you can adjust the bass, treble and balance knobs to taste. A spatialization function expands the audio field so it feels like music is all around you.

Its top-of-the-line deck has optimal biasing for the best sound quality and supports Type I and Type II (chrome) cassettes. No sluggish drums or warbly vocals – a user-adjustable motor with built-in speed control means your cassettes play at the right pitch. Enjoy pre-recorded tapes with better sound thanks to the deck’s Dolby B-like noise reduction circuit. Two lighted VU meters display playback and recording levels in real time. With a signal-to-noise ratio above 55 dB and distortion below 0.5%, the frequency response for cassette playback is 40 to 12,500 Hz so your cassettes sound as good as they did in their prime – or better.

Use the 3.5mm aux input, a microphone input with adjustable levels or two wireless mics for rap or karaoke battles to make stereo mixtapes. The recording frequency response is up to 11,500 Hz with distortion under 1% and an active AC erasing head means clear recordings with minimal noise. Want to record a live guitar jam? The GB-001 also doubles as a portable amp when plugged in. Because of its versatility it’s more than just a player. You can convert old tapes or record your own lo-fi songs, combining the warmth of analog music with modern convenience.

Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity means a solid, stutter free connection from computers, tablets and phones. If you’re feeling nostalgic you can connect turntables, CD players or even a MiniDisc via 3.5mm aux input. Both wired and wireless headphones are supported by the headphone socket and while using headphones the battery lasts up to 28 hours in aux mode or 15 hours in tape mode. A user replaceable 14.8V, 3000mAh lithium-ion battery powers the speakers for 15 hours in aux mode and 10 hours with cassettes. The GB-001 isn’t exactly light, but at 6.81kg and 50cm wide, 25cm tall and 18cm deep, it’s manageable to carry with its strong folding handle.

Its matte black body with acid-yellow buttons and silver trim screams 80’s boombox but with a modern edge. Made from brushed aluminum it feels premium and durable. The control panel is a tactile playground: physical knobs for volume, bass, treble and balance and a rotary switch for tape types or input sources. Every button press and knob turn feels satisfying like you’re actually interacting with your music. The VU meters glow softly and you can’t help but watch them dance.

Priced at £379 or €449 (around $500) it’s not cheap but it’s a fair ask for what you get. You’re getting a high fidelity speaker system, a precision cassette deck and a recording studio in one package. Preorders were supposed to open in July 2025 with shipping soon after, but exact dates have not yet been announced.
