Xpeng Aeroht Land Aircraft Carrier Flying Car UAE
Xpeng Aeroht, the flying car arm of Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng, has cleared a big hurdle in the United Arab Emirates. The company announced today that it has obtained a special flight permit for its Land Aircraft Carrier, a flying car that’s both a road vehicle and an aircraft.

This is the first time a Chinese flying car company has gotten such a permit overseas, and it sets the stage for Xpeng Aeroht to test its creation in the skies above the UAE. With manned flight tests planned across multiple locations and the first flight in Dubai this October, the company is serious about making flying cars a reality.

The UAE is a great testing ground. Its forward thinking on technology and transportation means less regulatory red tape in the skies compared to other countries, and its appetite for innovation matches Xpeng Aeroht’s vision. The company will use this opportunity to put the Land Aircraft Carrier through its paces, conducting real world flight tests to refine the vehicle. These tests will be critical to proving the car’s reliability and safety as Xpeng aims to deliver in the second half of 2026.

Land Aircraft Carrier has two parts: a flying vehicle and a “mother vehicle” that’s a mobile charging station. On the ground the mother vehicle drives like a conventional electric car, carrying the flying unit wherever it needs to go. When it’s time to fly, the flying vehicle detaches and takes off using electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology. This modular design solves the problem of flying cars: balancing roadworthiness with flight capability. By splitting the system into two specialized components, Xpeng Aeroht ensures neither function compromises the other.

It hasn’t been cheap or fast. Xpeng has invested around $600 million over 12 years and iterated seven times to get the design right. The result is a vehicle that has nearly 5,000 pre-orders in China where the appetite for futuristic transport is huge. At a media event on September 3, 2024, Xpeng Aeroht’s founder and president, Zhao Deli, announced the flying car’s price will be around $280,860 (RMB 2 million). That’s a lot of money, but for a vehicle that can drive to a field, take off and fly above traffic, it’s a glimpse into a future where personal air travel isn’t just for billionaires.
