Pivotal in Palo Alto has been working on something that could change how first responders reach people in need. Their Helix eVTOL, a single-seat electric aircraft that takes off and lands vertically, isn’t just another prototype gathering dust in a hangar. It’s already flown over 1,000 times this year and fire departments in California are starting to see it as a tool to get paramedics to emergencies faster than ever. With deliveries starting in early 2026, this little flyer might just be a game-changer for saving lives.



Built from carbon fiber and weighing under 158 pounds, it’s an ultralight aircraft under FAA rules. That means no pilot’s license is required and you can skip the red tape of formal certification. After a two-week training course with flight simulators, new pilots are ready to fly solo during daylight hours as long as they stay away from busy airports or restricted airspace. The eight electric rotors, mounted on detachable wings, let you hover, cruise or bank with just one joystick. Unlike other eVTOLs that adjust their rotors for different flight modes, Helix tilts its entire frame – up for takeoff and landing, forward for cruising at 64mph.

What’s got fire departments talking is Helix’s ability to get into areas that helicopters can’t. A recent demo in Thousand Oaks saw the aircraft land neatly in a residential cul-de-sac, something a typical helicopter can’t do with its loud noise and rotor wash. NASA measured Helix at 50 decibels from 150 feet up – quiet enough you’d miss it passing overhead at 200 feet. The ability to land in tight spaces without disturbing the neighborhood is huge for paramedics. The San Bernardino County Fire Department sees it as a way to reduce response times, especially in traffic or rural areas.


Helix can travel up to 20 miles in ideal conditions, but real-world flights typically top out at 17. Pilots are trained to land with at least 20% battery left so the 9kWh battery pack doesn’t leave them stranded in mid-air. The proprietary cells maintain full power output down to that threshold so there’s no drop off as the battery drains. For emergencies this range is often enough to get a paramedic to the scene quickly with a slimmed down medical kit that weighs as little as 16 pounds. It can’t carry the full load of an ambulance but Helix’s strength is speed – get someone on the ground to stabilize a patient or set up for a bigger rescue team.

Triple redundant flight controllers keep things stable, and if all else fails, a pilot operated parachute can slow the aircraft to a survivable 5m/s on descent. In 97% of test scenarios, pilots could walk away unharmed, even if the carbon fiber frame takes a beating. The Helix can carry up to 100kg, enough for most pilots and their gear. For first responders, Pivotal has worked with paramedics to design lightweight medical kits, reducing the weight of standard EMT bags by over 50%.

Cost is another hurdle, with prices starting at $190,000 and going up to $260,000 with extras like a travel trailer or advanced radio systems. That’s not cheap but for fire departments facing life or death situations the investment could pay off in faster response times and lives saved. Pivotal is also looking ahead, developing a gas electric hybrid version of the BlackFly with a potential range of 322km for military customers.
