Fourier Intelligence, a Shanghai-based robotics company, has launched the GR-3, a humanoid robot that’s more than a machine. Standing 165cm tall and weighing 71kg, this “Care-bot” combines soft materials, fluid movement and emotional connection to redefine how robots fit into human spaces.

The GR-3 has a soft, cream-colored exterior that feels pleasant and welcoming. Unlike previous robots’ cold metal shells, its soft surfaces and luxurious upholstery feels like a chair. This design prioritizes human comfort so the robot feels like a friend, not a cold device. Its wide, expressive eyes follow your gaze, blink organically and exude presence, perfect for hospitals, schools and eldercare institutions. The robot has 55 joints and can move with human-like fluidity whether bending to pick up an object or strolling with a light bounce.

Its ability to connect is built around a Full-Perception Multimodal Interaction System. This combines sight, sound and touch into one real-time processing engine. Four microphones detect where your voice is coming from so the robot turns towards you as you speak. Structured-light cameras for facial recognition and eye contact, 31 pressure sensors across its body to detect a tap or pat and elicit a lean or blink.

The GR-3 operates in two modes: a fast, rule-based system for quick responses and a lengthier, language-model-driven approach for more in-depth, context-aware interactions. This dual architecture enables it to adjust its replies depending on whether you sound joyful or angry.

With 55 degrees of movement, including 12 in its dexterous hands, the GR-3 can easily navigate difficult environments. It can squat, bend, or walk at 5 km/h while adapting to cramped or open environments. The robot also alternates between expressive gaits – such as a joyful bounce or a slower “fatigue mode” – to match the mood or situation, giving its actions more personality.

Its hot-swappable battery allows for nearly continuous use, or 3 hours per charge, and provides sophisticated power management for clinical conditions. As a result, it may work lengthy shifts supporting both personnel and patients. Developers may also use its open APIs to tailor its behaviour to your specific use case, from research to caregiving, making it a platform for you.
