Jamie Carragher has questioned how much ‘ability’ Jadon Sancho has after the winger was branded Manchester United’s ‘worst ever transfer signing’.

Sancho has been a massive disappointment at Old Trafford since his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

Arriving at United as a 21-year-old, Sancho had established himself as one of the most exciting players in Europe during his three-year spell at Dortmund.

Sancho impressed for Dortmund in the Champions League and had become a regular for England, earning 23 caps and playing in the Euro 2020 final.

The 25-year-old featured regularly in his first two seasons at Manchester United without making the contributions expected from one of the most expensive signings in Premier League history.

A bust-up with Erik ten Hag and a dip in form ensured Sancho has made just four appearances for the Red Devils since the start of the 2023-24 campaign.

The winger showed glimpses of his potential during loan moves to Dortmund and Chelsea but ultimately failed to earn a permanent transfer to either club.

Chelsea even paid Manchester United a £5m penalty to cancel an agreement to sign Sancho permanently.

Ruben Amorim had no plans to reintegrate Sancho into his first-team squad at Old Trafford and sanctioned his loan move to Aston Villa towards the end of the summer transfer window.

Speaking on The Overlap, United YouTuber Adam McKola described Sancho as the club’s ‘worst ever’ transfer signing.

‘I think Jadon Sancho is the worst signing Manchester United have ever made,’ he said. ‘There’s big competition for it.

‘We spent £80m on Antony who is useless. For me Jadon Sanco is the biggest waste of space I’ve ever seen in a United shirt.

‘I think he’s a disgrace and I can’t wait to see the back of him. He talked about ‘freedom’ after going to Chelsea and he’s still stinking the gaff out now.

‘Aston Villa are making a massive mistake taking him.’

Responding to those comments, ex-Liverpool and England defender Carragher revealed he is unsure over how much ‘ability’ Sancho even has.

‘It’s funny with Sancho because he got the reputation with Borussia Dortmund,’ Carragher said.

‘Me and Gary [Neville] were on Sky Sports a few years ago and we hadn’t seen much of him but he was doing really well at Dortmund in the Champions League.

‘We got asked to come up with an England squad and we didn’t put him in and got some stick on social media.

‘When you say he’s the worst Man Utd signing because of his ability… I’m not sure there’s much ability there.

‘I think he’s okay but I don’t understand what his thing is. I’ve been critical of Marcus Rashford but if I picture him playing well I can picture his pace and his shooting.

‘I don’t know what Sancho’s thing is. Every player has something but I can’t think in my head what he does. I’ve never seen it in my life. I haven’t.’

Sancho will be desperate to revive his career at Aston Villa but Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has concerns over the move.

‘Unai Emery might be good for Sancho but I do think it’s a weird signing,’ Scholes said.

‘Villa Park is a massive pitch and he’s got a lack of pace and a lack of legs. He’s got some brilliance but what’s his real strength? I don’t really know.’

Why Jadon Sancho agreed Aston Villa move

Sancho, who has entered the final year of his contract at Manchester United, will spend the rest of the season at Aston Villa.

Villa agreed to pay a loan fee to sign Sancho and will cover 80 per cent of his wages during his stay at the Midlands club.

Explaining his decision to join Aston Villa, Sancho said: ‘First of all, when I spoke to the manager, he gave me belief and confidence.

‘He showed me the plan for this year, and it really inspired me. He definitely persuaded me, and I can’t wait to work under him.

‘Wherever the manager needs me, I’ll be happy to play. I have individual goals, of course, but my main priority is the team.’

Sancho spoke to fellow Manchester United outcast Marcus Rashford about the move after his former teammate and close friend also spent time on loan at Aston Villa last season.

‘I spoke to him while he was here last season and I know he really enjoyed it,’ Sancho added.

‘He said so many lovely things about the club, like how it’s a family and you feel that friendly environment with great players and staff. I definitely felt that as I came in.’
